AIRE registration: the step Italian citizens abroad can't skip
Updated September 22, 2026
What AIRE is, who must register, how to do it through Fast It, and why it matters for passports, voting and taxes.
What AIRE is
AIRE (Anagrafe degli Italiani Residenti all'Estero) is the registry of Italian citizens living outside Italy. Recognition confirms you're Italian; AIRE records where you live. It is now integrated into ANPR, Italy's national civil registry.
Who must register
- Newly recognized jure sanguinis citizens living abroad. This finalizes your file and is needed for a passport.
- Any Italian citizen who moves abroad for more than 12 months, generally within 90 days.
How to register
- Create an account on the Fast It portal (serviziconsolari.esteri.it) and link it to your consular file.
- Submit the AIRE request with proof of recognition and your foreign address.
- Some consulates register new citizens automatically; others need you to file. Ask yours.
Why it matters when moving to Italy
When you move to Italy you'll transfer from AIRE to your comune's resident registry (anagrafe). AIRE history can also help prove time abroad for the impatriati tax incentive. Dual citizens who never registered should ask a tax advisor how to document their foreign residence instead.
